Magnetized boxes for housing polarized spins in homogeneous fields

2010

Abstract We present novel types of permanently magnetized as well as current powered boxes built from soft-ferromagnetic materials. They provide shielded magnetic fields which are homogeneous within a large fraction of the enclosed volume, thus minimizing size, weight, and costs. For the permanently magnetized solutions, homogenization is achieved either by an optimized distribution of the permanent field sources or by jacketing the field with a soft-ferromagnetic cylindrical shell which is magnetized in parallel to the enclosed field. The latter principle may be applied up to fields of about 0.1 T. With fields of about 1 mT, such boxes are being used for shipping spin-polarized 3 He worldw…

Hybrid simulation of electron cyclotron resonance heating

2008

Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) heating is a fundamentally important aspect in understanding the physics of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources (ECRIS). Absorption of the radio frequency (RF) microwave power by electron heating in the resonance zone depends on many parameters including frequency and electric field strength of the microwave, magnetic field structure and electron and ion density profiles. ECR absorption has been studied in the past by e.g. modelling electric field behaviour in the resonance zone and its near proximity. This paper introduces a new ECR heating code that implements damping of the microwave power in the vicinity of the resonance zone, utilizes electron de…

gamma-hadron correlations as a tool to trace the flow of energy lost from hard partons in heavy-ion collisions

2009

High transverse momentum (P_T) gamma-hadron correlations are currently being regarded as the 'golden channel' for the study of the medium produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions by means of hard probes. This is due to several reasons, all linked to the fact that because of the smallness of the electromagnetic coupling alpha, the photon does not substantially interact with the medium and is expected to escape unmodified. Thus, a high P_T photon indicates a hard process in the collision independent of the position of the hard vertex. In contrast, there may not be a clear signal for a hard process involving strongly interacting partons if the production vertex is deep in the medium …

Cosmological perturbations in extended electromagnetism. General gauge invariant approach

2013

A certain vector-tensor (VT) theory is revisited. It was proposed and analyzed as a theory of electromagnetism without the standard gauge invariance. Our attention is first focused on a detailed variational formulation of the theory, which leads to both a modified Lorentz force and the true energy momentum tensor of the vector field. The theory is then applied to cosmology. A complete gauge invariant treatment of the scalar perturbations is presented. For appropriate gauge invariant variables describing the scalar modes of the vector field (A-modes), it is proved that the evolution equations of these modes do not involve the scalar modes appearing in General Relativity (GR-modes), which are…

L0 trigger for the EMCal detector of the ALICE experiment

2012

Abstract The ALICE experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator was designed to study ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMCal) was built to provide measurement of photons, electrons, and jets, and trigger selection of hard-QCD events containing them. The EMCal single-shower L0 trigger, which triggers on large energy deposit within a 4×4 tower sliding window, became operational in 2010. The implementation of the real-time FPGA based algorithm optimized to provide a fast L0 decision is presented.

Performance of the photon spectrometer TAPS for deep subthreshold pion detection

2005

Abstract We present in this paper the characteristics of the BaF 2 spectrometer, TAPS, which allow to detect rare electromagnetic events in a high hadronic background. The case of deep subthreshold pions produced in 36 Ar+ 197 Au collisions at 25A and 35A MeV, in which the pion signal is much weaker than the hadronic background and comparable to the cosmic ray background, is studied.

Performance of the ALICE photon spectrometer PHOS

2003

Abstract We present in this paper the measured characteristics of a 64 lead–tungstate crystal array designed to detect high-energy photons and neutral mesons with the ALICE photon spectrometer PHOS. The array has been tested with electron and charged pion secondary beams delivered by the CERN PS and SPS synchrotrons. Photon energy and π 0 invariant mass resolutions are presented. The PHOS particle identification performance for data simulated with the AliRoot package is studied.

Scintillators for photon detection at medium energies—a comparative study of BaF2, CeF3 and PbWO4

2002

Abstract In a comparative study, the performance of sub-arrays consisting of large CeF 3 and PbWO 4 crystals has been investigated with high-energy photons below 1 GeV. Energy and time resolutions are determined and compared with the corresponding values for BaF 2 based on the experience of operating the electromagnetic calorimeter Taps .

The isospin structure of photoproduction of πη pairs from the nucleon in the threshold region

2015

Abstract Photoproduction of πη-pairs from nucleons has been investigated from threshold up to incident photon energies of ≈ 1.4 GeV. The quasi-free reactions γ p → p π 0 η , γ n → n π 0 η , γ p → n π + η , and γ n → p π − η were for the first time measured from nucleons bound in the deuteron. The corresponding reactions from a free-proton target were also studied to investigate final-state interaction effects (for neutral pions the free-proton results could be compared to previous measurements; the γ p → n π + η reaction was measured for the first time). For the π 0 η final state coherent production via the γ d → d π 0 η reaction was also investigated. The experiments were performed at the …
